Doing what you love for work
Sophie McClellan has loved dancing since she was three years old, and after graduating from high school in 2024, she turned her passion into a business with Unity Dance Studio. Based in Ellalong, just outside of Cessnock, Sophie saw an opportunity:
“Ellalong is quite a small town, and there’s not a lot in the way of after-school activities. Having a dance studio was a way to have something local for the kids and people around here.”
Opening the studio just made sense for Sophie, though the transition has been an adjustment.
“I teach dance because it’s what I love to do. I’ve been dancing my whole life. So coming to work doesn’t really feel like work; it’s just something that I enjoy doing. But being young and a business owner at the same time, three months after graduating high school? It’s been quite the shock.”
THE CHALLENGE
Finances overload
When Sophie started her business, she quickly learned that the administrative and financial side of running it was time-consuming.
To keep up, Sophie used Excel to invoice out to customers, but found that it wasn’t good enough:
“There were a lot of things happening at the time, and we were actually doing invoicing just through Excel, which just took forever to do”
