“The philosophy has been to be as useful to our community as we possibly can. Preserving Tasmania’s maritime history, being a social organisation, helping people get out on the water, and providing opportunities to build and maintain boats.”

INTRODUCTION

Embracing history and tradition

The Living Boat Trust (LBT) is a community-run organisation dedicated to preserving Tasmanian marine heritage.

Situated on the banks of the Huon River at Franklin in Southern Tasmania, LBT celebrates the history and beauty of the area. The members of the LBT build and maintain boats ranging from Nantucket-style whale boats to St. Ayles skiffs.

But it’s not just about boats, it’s about the people who are a part of the community. The LBT is a social organisation that brings people together and gets them out on the water.

Being part of the Living Boat Trust is about striving for a sustainable way of life, which is embodied in the Trust’s biennial Tawe Nunnugah Raid. The Tawe Nunnugah is an event where over 120 members spend 10 days rowing, sailing and camping from the south of Tasmania to Hobart, in time for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.

THE CHALLENGE

Keeping costs low

Rod Macfarlan is the treasurer for the Living Boat Society, and has been overseeing the finances of the society for 10 years. Part of the challenge for Rod and the society is to keep costs low for members.

“I’ve been the treasurer for ten years, and one of the things I’ve seen is that all our costs go up, and we try to keep our membership fees exactly as they were.”

With previous packages, there was a struggle to find something that worked and fit the needs of the trust.

“So we did have another accounting package, it was expensive. Aspects of it were non-intuitive or even buggy. Every year, I complained to our auditor about the software, and they just wanted to shut me up. He said try Reckon, and I’ve never looked back.”

“There are many packages out there, and a lot of them are too expensive for the services they provide”
