Whether you\u2019re embarking on a new business venture, or ensuring your existing business maintains its edge, you should always have a business development plan or business development strategy in the works.<\/p>\n<p>Not doing so will lead to stasis, missed opportunities, and wasting the potential of your business.<\/p>\n<p>So, what exactly is business development and how do you plan or strategise for it?<\/p>\n<h2>What is business development?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s the ideation behind creating strategies and plans to further a business\u2019s interests, viability, and scope, alongside the actions that will create this eventuality.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s generally a combination of various pursuits and initiatives that relate to the growth and continued health of a business. If you don\u2019t continually invest and re-invest in business development, you\u2019re essentially sitting still and could be awaiting the gradual decline of your business.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You may very well be fine without investing in developing your business. Then again, it\u2019s hard to see much growth if you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>By not pursuing business development, you can give up the opportunity to create a more profitable, resilient, and competitive business.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a business development strategy?<\/h2>\n<p>Now that we understand the concept, how do we frame up and plan the manifestation of our business development goals? With a strategy, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Simply, a business development strategy (also called a plan) is the documented map we use to achieve the goals we\u2019ve set. Creating a plan helps you focus on long-term business outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>When we refer to a business development plan or strategy, we\u2019re referring to a concrete document (like a business plan) that sets out the goals and all the actions needed to reach those goals.<\/p>\n<p>If we take our example of an New Zealand based surfboard retailer from above, a plan for a new target market may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Growth opportunities in your industry<\/li>\n<li>Business case for expansion into new markets of Australia and Hawaii<\/li>\n<li>A fresh sales plan<\/li>\n<li>A fresh marketing plan<\/li>\n<li>Market research<\/li>\n<li>New distribution models<\/li>\n<li>Increased production plans<\/li>\n<li>Possible partnerships<\/li>\n<li>Legal consultation<\/li>\n<li>Ways to measure success and goals to attain<\/li>\n<li>Forecasts of profitability<\/li>\n<li>Costings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Creating a business development strategy document allows these steps to be executed through a set of material actions. Also, make sure you\u2019re thinking long-term when you write it.<\/p>\n<h2>What does a business development manager do?<\/h2>\n<p>A business development manager, often termed a BDM, is the person you employ to oversee the rollout of a business development strategy and make it a reality.<\/p>\n<p>More than just a salesperson (as many BDMs are thought to be), the role of a true BDM in your sales team has a broader scope than just sales targets.<\/p>\n<p>A BDM\u2019s responsibilities include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Executing on a strategy<\/li>\n<li>Finding new opportunities for growth<\/li>\n<li>Researching markets and leads<\/li>\n<li>Collaborating with marketing and design services<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining current clients and customers<\/li>\n<li>Seeking out new clients<\/li>\n<li>Working to targets and KPIs<\/li>\n<li>Helping to form partnerships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Understanding the importance of successful business development, committing to writing a plan or strategy (and then executing on that plan) is one of the best ways for a committed business to achieve long-term, stable growth and prosperity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re at a loss as to how to start pursuing business development, you should be reaching out to your business advisor or creating a relationship with one.
