We\u2019ll look at the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) requirements you need to comply with and, if necessary, how to register for GST. The current rate of the goods and services tax (GST) in New Zealand is 15%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have just begun a business venture in New Zealand, you may need to register for GST and consequently include GST in the sale price of your goods or services on your tax invoices. You\u2019ll also need to report how much GST your business both paid and received to the IRD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>When to register for GST<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When do you need to register for GST in New Zealand?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re over the GST threshold of $60,000 per annum, or you predict to be turning over more than $60,000 per annum, you need to register for GST in New Zealand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also need to register for GST if you\u2019re charging GST in your prices (or are required to). This includes taxi and ride share services, for example.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How to register for GST?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do sole traders and businesses register for GST? Registering for GST is easily done through the IRD. In many circumstances, your advisor, bookkeeper, or accountant can manage this GST registration process on your behalf as part of their services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not using an advisor, you can easily register your own business with the IRD without much hassle. Registering for GST online through your myIR account is the most common method. Read on for details.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How to register for GST online<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you register for GST online? Follow these steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Login to your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myir.ird.govt.nz\/_\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myIR account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or create an account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When logged in, select \u2018I want to\u2019 then \u2018more\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select \u2018register for new tax accounts\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select your IRD number or the IRD number of the organisation you wish to register.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select \u2018goods and services tax (GST)\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Input the required business and personal information (details below).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll receive notification of your registration and this will be displayed in your myIR account within 10 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>What you will need to register for GST online<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When registering for GST you\u2019ll need the following information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your IRD number\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the bank account number you will use for GST refunds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your business\u2019 turnover for the previous 12 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your business\u2019 expected turnover in the next 12 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your business\u2019 BIC code \u2013 this can be found using the \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessdescription.co.nz\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find my BIC code tool\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your intended choice of filing frequency and accounting basis (either two- or six-month periods)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What to do once you are registered for GST<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that your business is registered for GST there are a few things you\u2019ll need to do to record taxable activity.
